How to Overcome Your Fear of Going to the Dentist

Posted by DR. AMI DESAI on Mar 11 2022, 04:07 AM

Ami Desai, D.D.S, tries to make every patient feel completely relaxed, at ease, and comfortable. But, with many suffering from dental anxiety, we have our work cut out for us. You're not alone, and we've helped thousands of people overcome their fears using a variety of techniques.

Locate an Appropriate Dentist

The choice of a dentist can be the difference between life and death. You'll be more at ease and confident in the care you're receiving from the right dentist. Look for a dentist who provides:

  • A caring and friendly staff
  • Excellent feedback from current patients
  • Open and honest answers to your inquiries
  • A relaxing and comfortable office setting
  • Personalized and cutting-edge dental care and treatments

Use Relaxation Techniques as Well as Medications

Take some time before our appointment to prepare your mind. Stretching, meditation or deep controlled breathing are all beneficial to many people. If you have severe fear, you should contact your dentist and inquire about what type of sedation techniques might be appropriate to help you relax even more.

Bring a Pal

Bring a friend or family member with you to our office that will go to help you. Having a supportive person nearby can make you feel safer and more relaxed, whether the person is waiting in the lobby or in your room with you.

Arrive on Time

If you are rushing to get to your appointment on time, you may become agitated. Don't place too much emphasis on the experience. Arrive early to allow yourself enough time to take care of yourself and relax.

Arrive early enough to spend a few minutes chatting with the front desk staff, asking questions, or simply relaxing in the lobby.

Inform Your Dentist

While it is unfortunate that dental anxiety is so widespread, it does mean that your dentist has a lot of experience helping people just like you.  Don't keep your fears to yourself; express them to your dentist and the dental team.

Your dentist wants to provide you with the personalized care and special attention you require for you to have a relaxing and enjoyable experience.
